法相宗の大本山である興福寺。その前身である「山階寺(やましなでら)」は、天智8年(669)に藤原鎌足が重い病気を患った際に、夫人である鏡女王が夫の回復を祈願して、釈迦三尊や四天王などの諸仏を安置するために造営したものと伝えられており、この名称は後世においても 興福寺の別称とし Kofukuji (興福寺, Kōfukuji) used to be the family temple of the Fujiwara, the most powerful aristocratic clan during much of the Nara and Heian Periods. The temple was established in Nara at the same time as the capital in 710. At the height of Fujiwara power, the temple consisted of over 150 buildings. 興福寺 Right on the main road through Nara Park, World Heritage Kohfukuji Temple is marked by an impressive five storey pagoda, a symbol of Nara which still dominates the landscape.
